Clonberne N.S. is delighted to be working towards renewing their application for the Active School Flag this year. It is a Department of Education and Skills initiative that recognises schools that “strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community”. Active School Flag Committee
All classes from Junior Infants to 6th Class will be helping to run and promote Active School Flag initiatives throughout the year. All class groups play an important role in helping to implement new active initiatives in the school. Each class group will be assigned an initiative and will discuss ideas to help promote their upcoming activity. They will devise slogans and design posters to display around the school. They will also help keep teachers and all other students informed of upcoming events and activities. We have an Active School notice board in the school corridor to show all the activities going on in the school. There is also a suggestion box in the corridor to allow children to submit any comments or ideas they may have in relation to being active. The classes helped to promote the following initiatives -
Junior & Senior Infants - Sports Day
1st & 2nd Class - Active Break Challenge
2nd & 3rd Class - Active School Slogan
4th & 5th Class - Run Around Ireland
5th & 6th Class - Santa Hat Dash

Santa Hat Dash
We had great fun the day we finished up for our Christmas holidays. We all got the chance to put on our best Christmas hats and jumpers and to have a run outside. Each class took their turn to run a lap of the school . The older children then had the chance to run extra laps. It was a great way to start the day before the arrival of the main attraction - Santa Claus!

'Active Break Every Day' Challenge
It was easy for each class to complete this challenge as each class was already taking part in daily activity breaks both indoors and outdoors. This four week challenge took place from 9th November until 4th December. Every class was given an Active Break Challenge Chart to record the activity they took part in each day. Classes could choose between running, dance, walkway and exercise activities. The children were very eager to complete the movement break each day and to fill in the chart. It was a great opportunity for all children to get out in the fresh air and to get moving.

Run Around Ireland Challenge
All children in the school were delighted to take part in this four week running challenge. We adapted the challenge to suit each class level. The children were very eager to run laps of the school to try to reach each destination on the map. It was a great incentive for children to get out running every day.

Active Homework
Children were asked to do ten minutes activity each evening as part of their homework during Active Schools Week. Every child received a record sheet to help them record the amount of time they spent being active each evening. The children were given tasks by their teacher or could choose to do whatever they wanted as long as they were being active. They got involved in a variety of activities including walking the dog, cycling, dancing to music, playing outside with family or friends, creating an obstacle course, going football or soccer training, doing exercises inside etc.
